Plot Summary
Book Review

The story of Middle-earth's creation, The Silmarillion contains not only the history of the elves, but of all the races of Middle-earth. It is the elf Fëanor's creation and hoarding of the Silmarils--stones imprisoning the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor--that drives the elves into Middle-earth. When the Trees are destroyed by the Dark Lord Morgoth, Fëanor refuses to share the light of the Silmarils, instead choosing to stir up rebellion on the island of Valinor. The other elves are led into Middle-earth and Fëanor burns the ships to keep them from returning. Not long after, the Silmarils are seized by Morgoth and put into his crown where they remain for many years. As centuries pass and new races are introduced into the world, great warriors claim victory over darkness, from the many-named Túrin to the inseparable Beren and Luthien. Numenor rises and falls, the Numenorians disappearing into Middle-earth as rangers. Even when Morgoth is eventually imprisoned, his minion Sauron lives on.
