I’m sure I looked like a total idiot, but I think we all do when we’re really happy. Except for Longspee. He just looked fabulous being happy.

Plot Summary

When Jon Whitcroft is sent off to a boarding school, he's pretty sure it's going to be nothing like Harry Potter. He's right: it's not. There's not a thing particularly special about his school, what's really special is the town--a town full of ghost tours and stories of spirits.

It doesn't take long for Jon to get on the bad side of a group of these ghosts, who harbor a centuries-long grudge against his ancestor and decide to attack him in broad daylight. While no one else present can see the ghosts and think him insane, Jon's new friend Ella believes him and brings him to her grandmother, a witch who leads some of the ghost tours. According to Ella's grandmother, certain people can see the ghosts, and Jon has stumbled into a particularly vengeful and dangerous pack of them indeed. At her prompting, he visits the tomb of the knight Longspee. The late knight agrees to protect Jon from the vengeful ghosts, and he appears to be a loyal ally...until Jon begins to hear disturbing stories about Longspee's past. And he begins to question whether Longspee is his friend, after all.
