Plot Summary

Genre: Fantasy

Reason for categorization in this age group: Reading level, mild violence

Number of Books: 12

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is not your typical viking. He's small and scrawny, speaks French and Dragonese and likes to read. He's worthless at subjects like Advanced Rudery and Bashyball, and he finds most of his tribe's ideas to be absolutely stupid. Unfortunately, he also happens to be the son of the Hairy Hooligan chief. When Hiccup has to steal and train a hunting dragon like all the other young vikings, he ends up with the tiniest, most common, of dragons, totally unfitting for a chief's son. The dragon doesn't even have teeth, hence the name: Toothless. With Hiccup's cousin Snotlout dead-bent on getting rid of Hiccup and becoming the heir, and preoccupied with training his stubborn little dragon, Hiccup thinks he has his hands full.

That's before Alvin the Treacherous shows up and pretty much ruins Hiccup's life.

Now haunted by a prophecy about the future king of the Wilderwest, Hiccup is on a race to obtain a collection of seemingly random items from Grimbeard the Ghastly. Hiccup doesn't want to become king, but if he doesn't collect the king's things before Alvin and his horrible mother do, then Alvin could end up on the throne and that would be the end of the dragons...forever.

With his friends Fishlegs and Camicazi by his side and Toothless on his shoulder, the three losers battle giant dragons, embark on ridiculously long swimming trips, rob the Meathead Public Library and do everything in their power to thwart Alvin's dastardly plans, save the dragons and preserve peace in the archipelago.
