Not only did Odd's father die on a Viking expedition, but one of his legs was shattered under a fallen tree and incorrectly healed, so that he must use a crutch. Also, everything is frozen in an annoyingly endless winter.

After Odd runs away to his father's old woodcutting hut, he encounters a bear, a fox and an eagle. They are the gods Thor, Loki and Odin, transformed into animals by Frost Giants.

Odd must now embark on a quest with the three gods to save Asgard from the Frost Giants.
