As simple as that, Conrad had finally done it. For the first time in his life he had the right answer. It wasn't the best decision and certainly wasn't a logical one, but it was the right one.

Plot Summary

Piper McCloud, homeschooled farm girl of Lowland County, has had the ability to float since infancy. Her parents are quiet, peaceful folk and decided long ago that no one in Lowland County could know about Piper's...condition. Her abilities become harder to hide when Piper discovers how to not only float by accident, but to fly at will. When the whole of Lowland County witnesses this spectacle during an unfortunate episode at the Fourth of July picnic, Piper is quickly rushed away from the public to a secret government facility for children like her--children with amazing abilities. She meets Conrad, the genius son of a rich Senator; Violet, who can change her size at will; Lily,  who is telekinetic; Smitty with his x-ray vision; Daisy, stronger than any man alive; the weather-controlling Mustafa twins; and electrifying Kimber, among others. Guided by the lovely and knowledgeable Dr. Letitia Hellion, Piper settles in to her life at I.N.S.A.N.E. (Institute of Normalcy, Stability, And NonExceptionality). That is, until disagreeable Conrad breaks the truth to Piper: that I.N.S.A.N.E. isn't there to nurture their abilities, but extinguish them. It is Dr. Hellion's mission to rid the world of unnaturalness, and to her, Piper McCloud might just be the most unnatural child of all. The children must join forces to bring down I.N.S.A.N.E. from the inside. Not impossible. After all, what's really impossible when you've got a girl who can fly on your side?

In The Boy Who Knew Everything, Conrad's sad past returns when his father is elected president of the United States. Sent away to I.N.S.A.N.E. at the age of seven for being unnaturally and inconveniently brilliant to his parents, Conrad has never met his little sister. In fact, he's had nothing to do with her at all until his mother shows up at the McCloud's farm and tells him that Aletha has gone missing. When Piper and Conrad finally recover her from her secret hiding spot in the White House, they find that they have been led right into a trap. President Harrington has apparently gone mad--even evil. However, when he is badly wounded during the fight, he experiences a moment of sanity and speaks to his son as a loving father, suggesting that he has somehow been hijacked all these years. The president is whisked away by a faceless attacker, and Conrad and Piper pursue them to a distant land full of people like them: people with extraordinary abilities. These gifts are nurtured and respected in Xanthia, a whimsical utopia. But all is not as it seems: as the search continues for Conrad's father in Xanthia and the other children try to find a way in to help their friends, Conrad and Piper begin to uncover a darkness in the paradise: a prophecy and an immortal evil which has been growing there and ruling for as far back as memory stretches. The girl who could fly and the boy who knew everything face their most terrifying challenge yet, and must have courage in the face of ultimate sacrifice.
