Plot Summary

In the world of Middle-earth, there live many races: man and goblin, ent and elf, orc and a quaint folk called the hobbits. The hobbits are short people with very large, hairy feet and a penchant for good food and tobacco--rarely adventurous types. When Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire the night of his eleventy-first birthday, he leaves behind more than his grand home behind for his nephew; Frodo receives the object that has been his uncle's most closely-guarded secret since the events of The Hobbit. Dark forces are on the move and the Eye of Sauron will not rest till the One Ring is in his possession once again. Thus begins the epic journey of the Fellowship of the Ring--Gandalf, the hobbits Frodo, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, the dwarf Gimli, the elf Legolas and the men Aragorn and Boromir. Their journey takes them through through the mountain realm of Moria, into the forests of Lothlórien, to Rohan and Gondor and finally beyond, into the dark and treacherous land of Mordor. The burden Frodo carries around his neck inevitably separates the Fellowship, yet they persist towards the same goal: ultimate destruction of the One Ring in the fires from whence it was made.
